Beck is a wonderfully talented and entertaining guy, and I agree with his politics probably 90% of the time. But he’s been so goofy on his Fox News Channel program the last couple of weeks that I just can’t watch any more.
I appreciate his sense of humor, but he’s trying so hard to be irreverent and funny that it’s impossible to take him seriously about anything. And anyone who does really looks like a wingnut.
What is this “inherited economy” of which you speak?
Confronting misgivings, even in his own party, President Barack Obama mounted a stout defense of his blueprint to overhaul the economy Thursday, declaring the national crisis is “not as bad as we think” and his plans will speed recovery.
Umm…if it’s not as bad as we think, why do we need a record-breaking budget deficit to fix it?
Well, that didn’t take long:
On another potentially controversial matter, the president also issued a “signing statement” with the bill, saying several of its provisions raised constitutional concerns and would be taken merely as suggestions.
Which proves me right: Obama doesn’t have a problem with signing statements, just statements that he doesn’t sign.
And now about those earmarks. This could be the “read my lips: no new taxes” moment of his presidency.
As critical as I’ve been of President Obama, he’s done a few things I support–halting the program that allows Mexican trucks on American roads, for one.
Here’s another: he’s ordered a review of the hundreds of unconstitutional signing statements used by President Bush to circumvent laws he didn’t like.
But wait — that doesn’t mean President Obama won’t use them himself. (more…)
The stimulus money hasn’t even been spent, but we’re already hearing calls for more:
The stunning pace of job losses raises the possibility that, perhaps as early as this summer, one in 10 Americans will be out of a job even though they are actively looking for work. It also means that the government faces even more pressure to take further action to stabilize the economy and the financial system.
President Obama, speaking in Columbus, Ohio, to police cadets whose jobs were saved with money from the $787 billion stimulus package, called the new unemployment figures “astounding.”
