It's not a field in which I am expert; by vocation, I am an outside sales representative for a steel distributor. My degree is in Economics, but it is an undergraduate degree only, and I haven't invested a lot of time in further study, to be honest. My brief column was prompted by the article by F. William Engdahl, which led to what seemed an epiphany at the time: complex economic theory (the trading price of oil, the value of real estate, etc.) is really nothing more than Econ 101 -- the law of supply (of currency in a given market) and demand (for oil/real property/baseball cards/whatever). In recent years, laws have changed to funnel more money into certain markets -- oil futures and real estate being the ones that affect us average folk most directly (although the price of a college education, thanks to more and more government programs diverting tax money into that market, has also far exceeded the rate of inflation here in the U.S.). Real demand has nothing to do with the change in price; more dollars chasing a relatively stable supply of oil/houses/seats for students results in a decline in the value of $-per-barrel/deed/diploma, hence more are required to buy.
