In a development little noticed by the American public, President Obama’s subordinates have quietly let it be known that he reserves the right to have American citizens overseas assassinated.
Not imprisoned. Not spied upon without a warrant. Killed in cold blood with no oversight whatsoever.

Glenn Greenwald has another excellent column at Salon.com on the imperial presidency. Where is the outcry from so-called conservatives over President Obama’s claim of authority to order the assassination of American citizens without oversight of any kind?
That’s right. This administration has a secret hit list of “dozens” of American citizens considered a threat. Aside from Keith Olbermann, of all people, and a couple of passing mentions in The Washington Post and the New York Times, this is a story that’s gone MIA from the major media.

When Campbell Brown, the perky but overmatched host of CNN’s 8PM Eastern slot, resigned, I hoped we’d finally get some news in the evening on one of the cable news channels. CNN, Fox, MSNBC, and Headline News have all morphed from broadcasting actual news in prime time to something closer to reality shows over the last couple of years, substituting O’Reilly, Olbermann, Hannity, Grace, Van Susteren, Maddow, Velez-Mitchell, et al for the news of the day. Fathers are an unappreciated species in America today. Fifty years ago, regardless of whether it reflected reality, the image of the wise, loving father as a fixture in pop culture. Today, dads are stereotyped as incompetent, inconsiderate, oversized adolescents; self-absorbed bumblers who are anything but the heads of their households.
After a steady diet of that programming during his formative years, what young man in his right mind would give up his X-box for that kind of life?

Gen Stanley McChrystal didn’t rise to his position in the Army by being an idiot. He had to know what would happen when he allowed himself and his staff to speak freely around a reporter, especially one writing for a publication like Rolling Stone.
So this explanation of “poor judgment” just doesn’t wash. Anyone over the age of 18 knows you don’t diss management when there’s a chance the boss will hear about it.
