Congress is on the verge of passing an unconstitutional health care reform bill. Democratic leaders were prepared to pass it without actually voting on it–which is, of course, also unconstitutional.

We shouldn’t be surprised. The federal government of the United States hasn’t allowed that pesky piece of paper to get in its way for generations.

Fringe radio host Alex Jones has apparently had a field day with this piece of analysis produced by the Missouri Information Analysis Center. The Internet is abuzz with breathless articles citing Jones’ website as a source of proof that the government thinks that anyone who supports a third party candidate for president is a terrorist.

Well…not quite.

Well, that didn’t take long:

On another potentially controversial matter, the president also issued a “signing statement” with the bill, saying several of its provisions raised constitutional concerns and would be taken merely as suggestions.

Which proves me right: Obama doesn’t have a problem with signing statements, just statements that he doesn’t sign.

And now about those earmarks. This could be the “read my lips: no new taxes” moment of his presidency.

As critical as I’ve been of President Obama, he’s done a few things I support–halting the program that allows Mexican trucks on American roads, for one.

Here’s another: he’s ordered a review of the hundreds of unconstitutional signing statements used by President Bush to circumvent laws he didn’t like.

But wait — that doesn’t mean President Obama won’t use them himself. (more…)
